Activities on Project Nam Sam 3 in Laos have started

KONČAR – Generators and Motors Ltd. (GIM) has started activities within its scope on the Nam Sam 3 project in Laos. Namely, in October 2021, after several rounds of demanding negotiations, GIM signed the contract for  design, production, factory testing and transport of three generators and the delivery of associated excitation and monitoring systems for Nam Sam 3 project.

Nam Sam 3 is a Greenfield project to build a new hydropower plant with three vertical units with Francis turbines, power of 61.7 MVA each, on Nam Sam River in Houaphan region in Laos. For the delivery of hydromechanical equipment, the Indian subsidiary of renowned turbine manufacturer was chosen, with GIM as its subcontractor for electrical scope.

The future HPP Nam Sam 3 will supply the electricity produced from Laos via the existing 220 kV distribution network to Vietnam in order to solve the problem of electricity shortage in neighboring parts of Vietnam. Its expected annual electricity production is 626 GWh.

GIM’s contractual obligations, in addition to three generators, spare parts, special tools and devices, include the delivery of three static excitation systems from KONČAR – Electronics and Informatics and three monitoring systems from KONČAR – Institute of Electrical Engineering, as well as supervision of installation and commissioning.

The project is currently in the civil works phase, and the completion of the installation of generators and related equipment and their commissioning is expected in the first quarter of 2024.

With this project, GIM continues to strengthen its presence in the countries of Southeast Asia.
